Welcome, interns, to the infrastructure optimization and enterprise virtualization module at MDC Group. This internship will help you deeply understand and master the open-source virtualization platform Proxmox VE to apply it to real-world systems.
Required Knowledge to Grasp
Before and during the process, interns need to proactively research and master the following concepts:
Basic Linux knowledge: Proficient in basic CLI commands on Debian/Ubuntu operating systems; how to configure static IP and manage software packages (apt).
Virtualization Concepts (Hypervisor): Clearly distinguish between Type-1 (Bare-metal) and Type-2 (Hosted) virtualization technologies.
Distinguish between VM and Container: Deeply understand the operating mechanism, advantages, and disadvantages of KVM compared to LXC.
Storage Systems: Understand storage formats such as Local Directory, LVM, ZFS, and shared storage solutions NFS/Samba...
Computer Networking in Virtualization: Master the operating mechanism of Linux Bridge (vmbr), VLAN, and how to route networks for virtual machines.
Execution Sequence
Interns will deploy sequentially according to the steps below under the supervision of a Mentor:
Register system resources:
Access the internal portal at: https://dev.mdcgroup.vn.
Submit a request for server/Lab resource allocation for the Proxmox module.
Wait for Mentor approval and receive handover information for the allocated physical server specifications.
Preparation and Installation:
Download the latest Proxmox VE ISO file from the homepage.
Connect to the server allocated by MDC Group (via direct USB Boot or through the remote management interface IPMI/KVM depending on the device).
Proceed with installation, setting parameters: Disk partitioning, setting static IP according to the allocated range, configuring Gateway, DNS, and root password.
Initial Configuration & Interface Management:
Access the Web UI via the address https://<YOUR_IP>:8006.
Disable the "No Subscription" warning (free version) via Terminal.
Update the system to the latest version from the Proxmox repository.
Manage Storage & ISO Resources:
Upload operating system ISO files (Ubuntu Server, Windows Server...) to the local storage partition.
Download and update LXC Container Templates from the Proxmox library.
Create and Manage Virtual Machines (VM/LXC):
Create 01 Virtual Machine (VM - KVM) installing Linux/Windows operating system. Configure Hardware (CPU, RAM, Network).
Create 01 lightweight Container (LXC) running basic services (e.g., Nginx web server).
Test features: Start, Stop, Clone (Linked/Full), and Snapshot.
Backup & Restore Configuration:
Set up automatic Backup schedule: Snapshot/Suspend/Stop.
Experiment with deleting simulated data and performing a Restore of the virtual machine to check data integrity.
Result Acceptance
Upon completing the execution sequence, interns complete the following acceptance procedures to be recognized as having completed the module:
Answer the multiple-choice test: Access the internal server system https://dev.https://dev.mdcgroup.vn (Assessment/Exam section) to take the 20-question theoretical survey in 15 minutes.
Questions & Suggestions: Record any difficulties encountered, solutions, or suggestions for improving the system deployment process in the personal report file.
Report results to management: Send the technical report file (PDF or Markdown format) with screenshots of the fully configured Proxmox Dashboard to the responsible Mentor at MDC Group.
Participate in the weekend discussion: Directly present briefly (5-10 minutes) on the achieved results, answer challenging questions from the Mentor, and discuss with other interns in the general Saturday session.
